When an Immigrant Hires a Native

So why did I pick that for a title? Well see, the day our school becomes a 1:1 school, I am going to take all my journal entries and compose a book and give it the title: "When an Immigrant Hires a Native". The journal entries chronicle SRS's journey to 1:1, from the day I was hired, the hours I have spent preparing presentations or reading research, to the future event of roll-out.

So why is laptop learning so important to me? I had access to a computer since before I started Kindergarten- both at home and at school. I went through a progressive district that valued technology and then was hired by a principal who also valued technology- not to mention she went through the same elementary school system just 14 years earlier.

Most importantly, it is the future and if we continued doing the same things we will continue getting the same results. I did not enter teaching to produce the same results- I entered teaching to give students better opportunities than I was given.

The New School Year

What a start to the school year. We introduced 60 additional laptops in our school and my favorite comment so far was the third grader who told his teacher that it was "unfair" that the laptops were for the old kids. If I had my way of unlimited resources and time, I would have every kid at SRS with their own laptop- I would be amazed at the possibilities.

Well, what are my goals for the new school year?

  • Have Fun

  • Plan another technology day.

  • Write in my

Web 2.0 in Everyday Life

So today, admist working on handbooks, I gave my principal an idea about how to use a blog for communication. We set up the blog and began thinking ways to use that technology and the other technologies. After a bit of playing we went back to the handbooks.

However, we didn't stay away from Web 2.0 for too long. We took the handbooks and placed in Google Apps so we could edit together. I am afraid the kids will claim we have gone "crazy". Although, using these tools is not "crazy" but r… Continue

The Move to SRS2.0

Last year I had the opportunity to attend NECC in San Diego. Trying to disseminate my information and pass on my excitement to other teachers seemed monumental. Most teachers looked at me like the "crazed digital native, just out of college, newbie teacher" that I was. but a few tried out my suggestions and we started the technology integration program and the quest for more laptops because 1 cart was not enough.

However I was asked what I was going to do to with the knowledge that I le… Continue

Policies

Well I am in the middle of revising our Student Handbook and Faculty Handbook- what a JOB! So I have concluded that now is the optimal time to revise technology policies. However, I am having writer's block in this department. =) I have been using the policies developed by my predecessor, which are written for a workplace and not a school. This summer, I have made time to revise these policies to make them more student friendly. I would love ideas from other schools because I am sure there are t… Continue

My First Post

Well, it has taken a while for me to get on the "bandwagon", even though my school uses blogs and wikis and I am the primary teacher of these tools, this is the first chance I have gotten to try these tools out for myself.

Here is my background:

I am starting my 3rd year at St. Raphael's Catholic School. We have a 1:2.42 student to computer ratio and we are slowly working our way to becoming a 1:1 school (at least in our middle school). I tried this year to put one of our new c… Continue

It looks like you and I are in the same spot. I teach teachers and students about blogging but have not really sat down and consistently completed my own blog. I am hoping to use this ning as a way to motivate me for more blogging and sharing of information.
