Preparing Students with 21st Century Skills

Last year I had the opportunity to attend NECC in San Diego. Trying to disseminate my information and pass on my excitement to other teachers seemed monumental. Most teachers looked at me like the "crazed digital native, just out of college, newbie teacher" that I was. but a few tried out my suggestions and we started the technology integration program and the quest for more laptops because 1 cart was not enough.

However I was asked what I was going to do to with the knowledge that I learned from NECC last year and this year. I realized that last year was the step towards SRS2.0 and what we did last year to get our sixty new laptops was just the first step of many to get to our goal of 1:1.

This past year I have launched a new website, moved our school to a new domain name, spent hours with a team of parents evaluating the old website to make sure we were addressing new families and current families. Gave our students access to a huge database of teacher selected resources. Presented to our parents during the State of the School about the importance of Technology. Hosted a Technology Day to help other schools learn how technology is used in the classroom. Finally, I brought more people to NECC.

I took the principal and the teacher who presented with me at the State of the School with me to Atlanta and my "digital pioneers" came away with the same excitement and drive that I did. One of the big goals this summer we have is to expand our web presence, we are starting with a few iWeb pages (see Staff Websites) and we have begun setting up WordPress, WikiSpaces, and Moodle for our teachers. I also want to create a database of what our teachers have done with technology integration. As far as the most important person in the equation, the student, we want our students to create iMovies, use Google Apps to collaborate, participate in their learning with access to their grades. I just think back to when I asked a teacher his thoughts on why we needed 60 more laptops he so eloquently and simply said to me, "The students use the computer as their toolbox. I just make sure I provide them with the tools inside."
